The four rules this checks

Every one of these comes from Etsy’s own help centre, and you generally don’t find out you have broken one until you are already at the upload step — a frustrating place to discover it, because by then you have already built the file.

  • Five files per listing. Instant downloads take up to five files; so does completing a made-to-order order.
  • 20MB per file. Per file, not per listing.
  • File type is best kept to one Etsy lists as supported (the full list is below).
  • File names are limited to 70 alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores, or hyphens.

The file types Etsy lists as supported

Etsy publishes this list inside a collapsed section of its digital-listings help page, which is why it is so often quoted wrongly:

.bmp · .doc · .epub · .gif · .ibook · .jpeg · .jpg · .mobi · .mov · .mp3 · .mpeg · .pdf · .png · .psp · .rtf · .stl · .txt · .zip

Plenty of formats sellers use every day are absent — SVG, WEBP, AI, EPS, DXF, DOCX, XLSX and MP4 among them. Being off this list is not the same as Etsy publishing a ban, and we are not going to tell you it is. What we can say is the practical workaround sellers use either way: put those files inside a .zip, which is on the list. That is also how most cut-file and font bundles get delivered.

One thing worth separating out, because it trips people up: these are the rules for the files a buyer downloads. Your listing photos follow a different set of rules entirely — that is what the Etsy listing image checker is for.

Name your files before you upload, not after

Etsy is explicit that “the file names you see will be the same ones your buyers see” and that there is no way to edit a name after uploading. So final_v3_FIXED_2.zip is what your customer receives, and the only way to change it is to remove the file and upload it again.

Sticking to letters, numbers, periods, underscores and hyphens keeps you inside Etsy’s character set and reads as more professional. Watercolour-Wall-Art-8x10.zip costs nothing and tells the buyer what they just bought.

Frequently asked questions

How many files can an Etsy digital listing have?

Five. Etsy’s help centre states you can upload up to five digital files per instant-download listing, and the same five-file limit applies when you complete a made-to-order digital order.

What is the maximum file size for an Etsy digital download?

20MB per file. That is a per-file limit rather than a total, so five 20MB files are fine but one 21MB file is not, even on an otherwise empty listing. Re-exporting at a lower resolution or splitting the product across several files is usually the fix — zipping an already-compressed JPEG, PNG or MP3 saves almost nothing.

Why does my file name matter?

Etsy limits file names to 70 alphanumeric characters, periods, underscores or hyphens — so spaces, brackets, ampersands and other punctuation fall outside that set. It also matters commercially: the name you upload is the name your buyer sees, and Etsy has no way to edit it afterwards.

Do my files leave my computer?

No. This checker only reads each file’s name and size, which the browser already knows — the contents are never read, and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
