What Etsy actually requires

  • At least 2000 px wide and 2000 px tall. This is the headline requirement and the one most photos fail.
  • JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG or HEIC — but not animated GIFs and not transparent PNGs.
  • Around 1 MB or less. Etsy warns that larger files may not finish uploading.
  • Works in several crops. Etsy displays listing images differently in different places, so nothing important should sit near the edges.

The transparent-PNG trap

If you design mockups or flat-lays in a tool that exports with a transparent background, the file will still upload — but Etsy does not support transparency in listing images, so what buyers see may not be what you intended. This checker reads the alpha channel and tells you before you list. To flatten it onto a solid background, run it through the image converter and export as JPG, choosing the background colour.

Sizing up, not down

If your photo is under 2000 px, do not simply enlarge it — that invents pixels and looks soft. Re-export from the original at a larger size instead. If you need to change dimensions on a photo that is already big enough, use the image resizer.

Frequently asked questions

What size does Etsy require for listing photos?

Etsy asks for listing photos at least 2000 pixels on both the width and the height. Bigger is fine — buyers can zoom further. Your first photo in particular should be well above the minimum.

Which file types does Etsy accept?

JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC. Two important exceptions: animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. A transparent PNG is the one that catches sellers out — it uploads but the transparency is not honoured, so the result can look wrong.

Why does my photo keep failing to upload?

Usually file size. Etsy warns that images over about 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slower connection. If a photo stalls, re-save it smaller — our image converter can shrink a JPG considerably with almost no visible loss.

What aspect ratio should I use?

Etsy does not publish a single required ratio. It shows your photo in different crops in different places — square in some views — and advises uploading photos that work across multiple crops. So keep your product within roughly the middle 70% of the frame and it will survive whichever crop is applied.
