Pixels to print size, explained

Print size is just pixels divided by DPI. A 3000-pixel-wide file prints 10 inches wide at 300 DPI (3000 ÷ 300), or 20 inches at 150 DPI. More pixels means a bigger sharp print. Enter your pixels above to see your limits, or use the reverse calculator to get the canvas size for a target print size. To measure the DPI of a file you already have, use the DPI checker; to shrink or resize one, the image resizer.

Standard poster sizes and the pixels they need

Posters are a core print-on-demand product. Here are common poster sizes with the pixels for a sharp 300 DPI print, plus the 150 DPI minimum for large pieces viewed from a distance.

Which resolution should I aim for?

  • 300 DPI — the standard for printables, art prints, cards and stickers.
  • 200 DPI — fine for medium prints and posters seen from a step back.
  • 150 DPI — large wall art and banners viewed from a distance.

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels do I need for an 8 × 10 inch print?

At the 300 DPI print standard you need 2400 × 3000 pixels (width × 300, height × 300). This calculator works that out for any size and DPI.

What DPI should Etsy printables and digital downloads be?

300 DPI is the standard for printables, wall art and anything viewed up close. Set your canvas so the pixel size equals the print size in inches multiplied by 300.

Can I just make a small image bigger to print larger?

Not really. Enlarging adds pixels by guessing, which looks soft. The reliable maximum print size is set by the pixels you already have — that is exactly what the table below shows.
