Getting your printable ready for buyers everywhere

The safest approach is to offer both US Letter and A4 versions in your listing. If you only make one, design at US Letter and tell buyers to choose “Fit to page” when printing on A4 — it scales cleanly with a small border. This tool confirms exactly which size your file is.

Standard page sizes at a glance

Page size in a PDF is stored in points (1 point = 1/72 inch), which is why the numbers below look unfamiliar. The checker converts them for you.

Why a printable prints with the wrong margins

Three things cause almost every “it printed wrong” message:

  • Letter/A4 mismatch. A4 is narrower and taller than Letter, so a Letter design on A4 loses a sliver at the sides and gains space at the bottom.
  • Scaling settings. Printing at “Actual size” on the other standard crops edges; “Fit to page” scales cleanly. Say which one you intend in your listing.
  • A non-standard canvas. It is easy to design on a custom size and end up with a page that is neither Letter nor A4 — awkward on every printer. The checker flags this.

Design for the unprintable edge

Home printers cannot print all the way to the paper edge — they grip the sheet, leaving roughly 3–5 mm that never receives ink. Keep text and borders at least 0.25 inch (6 mm) inside the page and your printable works on any machine. There is more on this in bleed and margins for printables, and the Letter-versus-A4 decision is covered in US Letter vs A4.

Frequently asked questions

Why does US Letter vs A4 matter for printables?

US buyers print on Letter (8.5 × 11 in); most of the rest of the world uses A4 (210 × 297 mm). If your printable is only one size, buyers on the other standard get cut-off edges or white borders. Many top sellers include both.

My PDF size could not be read — why?

Some PDFs store their page size in a compressed structure this in-browser checker cannot see. Try re-exporting or “printing to PDF” from your design tool, which usually writes a readable page size.
