How to Check DPI in Canva (and Actually Verify Your Export)

Canva has no DPI readout. There is no panel, no file-info box, no export setting labelled “300 DPI” for images. That’s a real problem if you sell printables, because buyers expect print-quality files — so here’s how to get one, and how to confirm you actually did.
Why Canva hides it
Canva is built around pixel dimensions, not print resolution. A design is 2000 × 2500 pixels; whether that’s 300 DPI or 72 DPI depends entirely on the size it gets printed at. Canva doesn’t ask, so it doesn’t tell.
The practical consequences:
- PDF Print is the one export Canva puts a resolution figure against. Its help centre lists PDF Print at 300 dpi and PDF Standard at 96 dpi, and states that PDF Print is the only file type that saves professional print quality at 300 DPI.
- PNG and JPG carry no promise at all. A 1× download gives you exactly your canvas’s pixel dimensions and nothing more — so whether that is 300 DPI or 90 DPI depends entirely on how big the buyer prints it.
How to change the DPI in Canva
You can’t. Not directly — there is no DPI field to type 300 into, and that is the single most common misunderstanding about Canva. DPI isn’t a setting here; it’s the result of two numbers you do control:
pixels ÷ print size in inches = your real DPI
So “changing the DPI” means changing one side of that division. Three ways, most reliable first:
- Export as PDF Print instead. If your product can be a PDF, this is the entire answer — Canva renders it at 300 dpi and you’re done.
- Size the canvas correctly before you design. Resize → Custom size → inches, at the final print size. An 8 × 10 inch printable needs 2400 × 3000 pixels to be a true 300 DPI. Do this first; it is much less painful than discovering it after the artwork is finished.
- Raise the download size multiplier. On a PNG or JPG download, the size slider (0.5×, 1×, 2×, 3×) multiplies the exported pixels. Canva limits “quality, scale, and compression options” to its Pro, Enterprise, Education and Nonprofit plans, so on a free account this route is closed and option 1 or 2 is your fix.
And three things that look like they should change DPI but don’t:
- The “high quality” or compression toggle. It compresses less. It does not add pixels.
- Upscaling the exported file afterwards in another app. That invents pixels by interpolation and prints soft. Re-exporting from Canva at a higher multiplier is genuinely different — Canva re-renders your text and shapes at the new size, so they come out crisp. Same-looking action, opposite results.
- Changing the DPI tag in an image editor without resampling. That edits a note attached to the file, not the file.
Why you keep seeing 72 DPI, or 96
Both numbers circulate and both are half-truths.
72 is usually your software talking, not Canva. PNG stores resolution in an optional chunk, and when it’s absent — as it often is — most viewers fall back to displaying 72 DPI. That’s the file saying “no information”, which then gets read as a measurement.
96 is the figure Canva documents for PDF Standard export, and it’s also the web standard for converting inches to CSS pixels, which is why a canvas you set in inches often lands on suspiciously round pixel counts.
Neither number tells you whether your file prints well. A 2400 × 3000 PNG tagged 72 DPI prints beautifully at 8 × 10 inches. A 768 × 960 PNG tagged 300 DPI does not. The tag is a label; the pixels are the product.
The reliable way to export a print-quality file
Best option — PDF Print. Share → Download → File type: PDF Print. Tick “crop marks and bleed” only if your printer asked for it (most print-at-home buyers don’t want it).
If you need a PNG or JPG: set the canvas in inches or millimetres at the final print size first (Custom size → inches), then compare the pixel dimensions Canva reports against the table further down before you export. Short of the target, raise the size multiplier until you aren’t. Nothing in Canva adds pixels that were never there, so this is a decision to make at the start of a design rather than a rescue at the end.

Now verify it — don’t trust the setting
This is the step almost everyone skips. The number saved inside a file doesn’t decide print quality; pixels ÷ print size does. A file can say “300 DPI” in its metadata and still be soft, or say “72 DPI” and print perfectly.

The maths, if you want to do it by hand: multiply your print size in inches by 300. An 8 × 10 inch printable needs 2400 × 3000 pixels. If your export is smaller than that, it isn’t 300 DPI, whatever the software claimed.

Export as PDF Print for printables, or PNG at 3× from a correctly-sized canvas. Then verify the actual file rather than trusting the export dialog — it takes about five seconds and it’s the difference between a five-star review and a refund request.
